What safety rules apply on a lift day?
On a lift day the rules that actually show up are silica from drilling, chemical exposure from foam or cement, eye and hand protection, and ordinary construction PPE. OSHA sets the construction PEL for respirable crystalline silica at 50 μg/m3 as an 8-hour TWA under 29 CFR 1926.1153 [1]. The same standard sets the action level at 25 μg/m3 as an 8-hour TWA [1]. Those two numbers belong on your drill plan.
The standard says, in the employer-duty sentence on the PEL, “The employer shall ensure that no employee is exposed to an airborne concentration of respirable crystalline silica in excess of 50 μg/m3, calculated as an 8-hour TWA” [1]. Foam days add isocyanates. OSHA’s chemical table lists a 0.02 ppm ceiling for MDI [2]. A ceiling is not an 8-hour average you can dilute with a long lunch.
